Karisa patient-artist, age 10

Karisa patient-artist, age 10For 10-year-old Karisa and her mother, Melissa, The Paint Box Project's art parties are a welcome distraction from coping with leukemia. They're also a chance to rediscover some of the most interesting and beautiful locations in Western New York.

"It's such a great feeling for the kids to see their art chosen for holiday cards and gifts," said Melissa. "Plus, they get to attend art parties in these fabulous architectural wonders in Buffalo, like the Darwin Martin House." Melissa says that attending art parties at these impressive spots helps parents and their kids take their minds off cancer, even if just for a few hours.

Finished with treatment in April 2008, Karisa now looks forward to attending school at the Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts and keeping up her Paint Box creations, which include the past favorite "Polar Bear" holiday card; the "Lake Effect Buffalo" holiday card; and the 2008 Buffalo Ornament.
